Dental implants are among the most popular choices for replacing teeth. Missing one tooth or multiple teeth can have negative effects on your health and your appearance. You do not have to continue struggling with these issues. Implants have many benefits and can help you achieve your goal of regaining your smile. It is important to understand how the process works and what the results will be.

Common causes of missing teeth

The enamel portion of teeth is harder than bone. This contributes to teeth being durable and able to last a lifetime. Still, certain factors can contribute to tooth loss and a person needing dental implants. One of the main causes is poor oral hygiene. When a person does not brush or floss effectively or often, tooth decay and gum disease can occur. These conditions can cause teeth to rot or become loose and fall out.

Additionally, accidents and injuries can knock teeth out. Sometimes, the dentist can place the teeth back in, but usually, this is not possible. A hard blow to the face from a fall or collision can dislodge a tooth. Biting into hard foods or using the teeth as tools to open things can also break or pull out a tooth.

An overview of dental implants

Implants consist of three parts: a titanium post, an abutment, and a crown. The crown is usually made of porcelain or ceramic and closely resembles a natural tooth in size, shape, and color. Implants restore the mouth’s full function and improve the aesthetics of the person’s smile. With implants, a person can once again chew properly. Implants should last at least 20 years but often last a lifetime. To be a good candidate for implants, a patient should have a strong jawbone.

Surgical procedures

Though there are advantages to having implants, there are challenges too. Getting implants requires at least two surgeries along with lengthy recovery times. First, the dentist must place the posts deep into the jawbone. To do this, the dentist numbs the patient’s mouth and then makes an incision in the gums. Then, the dentist drives the screw-like posts into the jaw. The dentist stitches the incision wound and leaves the post exposed a little above the gum.

The next procedure occurs several months later after the patient has healed. It is placing the abutment, a small piece that connects to the post. The dentist opens the gums again and places the abutment. On top of it, the dentist will put a temporary crown.

Finishing the process

After the patient heals from the second surgery, the dentist is ready to place the permanent crown. The crown will match the surrounding teeth. It will also be strong enough for the patient to eat most foods. It can take the patient a few weeks to become accustomed to how the crown feels.
