There is a lot to like about getting dental implants. If you have been struggling because of tooth loss, implants can solve many of your concerns. For example, implants are natural-looking and allow you to once again have a full smile. They are also strong and durable, so you can resume eating most foods and have a healthier diet. It can take several months or more to complete the implant restoration process. It is helpful to understand how the process works and what you can expect.

Common causes of tooth loss

Losing permanent teeth presents significant issues. Many causes of tooth loss are preventable, however. Often, a person will lose teeth due to severe decay or infections. This typically occurs because of poor brushing and flossing habits. Tooth loss can also be the result of excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

It is also possible to suffer tooth loss in accidents or injuries. For example, a hard blow to the face can knock out a tooth. Car accidents, falls, or sports injuries can lead to tooth loss. Some people knock out teeth by biting into hard objects.

The first surgery

If the patient has good bone growth, the cosmetic dentist can begin the dental implants treatment. The first surgery can occur during a single appointment. The dentist will numb the patient and then open up the gums. Next, the dentist inserts the screw-like posts deep into the jawbone. The dentist stitches the incision wound. To allow the bone and post to fuse and for the patient to heal, there is a recovery period of three to six months.

The second surgery

The next visit to the dentist’s office will be for the dentist to attach the abutment to the post. The dentist once again numbs the patient and cuts into the gums, exposing the top of the post. Next, the dentist will place the abutment on the post, which will act as a connector between the post and crown. More healing time will be necessary, so the patient will typically wait anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before the final step.

Getting the crown

During the healing and recovery period, the dentist will build the crown. This natural-looking artificial tooth will usually be made of porcelain or ceramic. Dental crowns complete the dental implants and restore the smile. The final appointment takes place over a single day and lasts less than an hour. During the visit, the dentist will ensure that the crown fits properly and is comfortable.

Getting dental implants is worth the time and effort

You should not let the long timeframe of getting dental implants worry you. Once you have your implants, you can enjoy a new, attractive smile. Plus, you can enjoy improved oral health and minimize the risk of suffering additional tooth loss. If you have questions about getting implants, visit your cosmetic dentist.
